it's like a horrible nightmare I can't wake up from
I wasn't planning on posting anything today other than, possibly, a ramble about 9/11 much like dozens you've already skimmed over, but I just got some urgent and bad news. The one bright spot is that it may not be too late and there is, in theory at least, something we might be able to do.
Deep breath.
Farscape has been cancelled.
Yes, really. I know, it makes no sense whatsoever. It's the best show Sci-Fi has, the best show they've ever had, and the show's creators had a multi-year contract that was supposed to prevent stupid shit like this... nonetheless, some wanker in network management wanted to pay less money for the show than they had been already, and refuses to take 'no' for an answer.
No sense whatsoever.
On to the what-we-can-do:
There's an online petition at ipetitions.com (and if one person could post a comment with the current number of signatures from irc.scifi.com, #farscape I'd be most grateful, as my computer refuses to run IRC) -- signing the petition is both easy and helpful, but don't stop there.
You can send email to programming@scifi.com or tvontv@scifi.com -- again helpful and again relatively easy.
We all know, though, that in situations like these, physical letters delivered by the US Snail carry the most weight. Hey, if you're typing up a note to email anyway, why not print it off and mail it? Surely it's worth a handful of change to help save such a peerless show.
The honchos to target are:
>Michael Jackson, President and CEO of USA Entertainment
>Bonnie Hammer, Executive Vice President and General Manager
>Thomas Vitale, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions, Scheduling, and Program Planning (the 2nd email address above is his)
Mr. Jackson of the unfortunate moniker (though I'm sure cracks about same would be counterproductive) has the most influence, but if you're printing the letter once and have stamps burning a hole in your desk drawer, go ahead and tell it to his associates, too.
The address to use for all three is
c/o Sci Fi Channel
1230 Avenue of the Americas, F115
New York, NY 10020-1513
Also, if you have the long distance minutes to burn (or live in NYC), regardless of whether you're also sending your message(s) of support via online or postal means, there are several useful contact numbers...
Viewer comment line: 212-413-5000
Programming line: 212-413-5821
Comments line: 212-413-5577
General line: 212-413-6531
There are yet more ways to show your support, including fax and telegram, at the Help Save Farscape page. Time is of the essence; they've already stopped filming, so the pressure needs to be put on with all due haste.
While it's true that it's difficult to save a show once something like this happens, it's not impossible. The Sentinel was renewed for enough of a final season to resolve its cliffhanger and give fans some closure, and that was a much more difficult sell, both in terms of the network airing the show and the nature of the show itself.
If Farscape dies, we can mourn it then. Until then, I'm going to fight.
As far as I know, this is the most recent news.
Incidentally, I find it odd that I didn't find out about this from another LJ. If anyone wants to, feel free to lift as much of this for your own Save Farscape entry as you like, provided that you credit and/or link to me. I found out from Tom Tomorrow.
