Batman/Robin: Do you see what I see...

I've seen a certain, peculiar idea appearing in different places around fandom, of late. It's come up in __marcelo's post about Alfred, as well as in comments on several of Te's recent meta posts, among other places. And then cereta posted a rant-cum-squee about Batman/Robin as a romantic and/or sexual pairing (well, I asked for that, didn't I...) and when I went to read and respond to it this morning, the recurrence of that peculiar notion hung me up to the point that I had to put off looking at the rest of that post in order to make this one.

Since it was in a comment on a public post, and I have it here handy, I'm just going to quote elynross's phrasing of the idea. (Presumably she'll tell me if she objects, in which case I'll remove her words from my post.)

"While I understand that each story of Batman/A Robin stands apart from others, the sense I get is that the Batman of a large portion of the fandom has not only slept with Dick, or Jason, or Tim, but all of them."

And every time I've come across statements such as this, however phrased, I'm frankly boggled. Most of my closest friends in fandom have written Batman/Robin at least once, and I've done it myself, sure. But I don't think I know anyone believes that Bruce did have sex with more than one Robin, if they even believe he had sex with one of them -- as opposed to being open to reading and writing fictional accounts of what might happen if he had.

But, hey, I could be wrong. Most likely, as usual, the truth is somewhere in the middle.
