fic update, comments, concatenation

The final version of "Knowing" (my little Batfic for the Defining Moment challenge) is done, if anyone cares. I updated the original draft here and posted it to Jae's Challenge page here, and (presumably) it'll eventually go up at the challenge's archive page that Jae recently set up. Thanks again to Val -- cos there's just not enough of saying that -- for looking it over for me.

Finally got round to replying to comments in my LJ I'd left unanswered too long, and was shocked at just how long I'd left some of them. Bad Jack, I am. Still working on dropping feedback in friends' LJs, but I'm caught up here, at least. (Except for Kitty who's no doubt put up another response or two while I've been typing this.)

Lat [livejournal.com profile] latxcvi and FayJay [livejournal.com profile] pandarus and Allison Skye have been talking about the way names get smooshed together in pairings (ie Clark + Lex = Clex), and how they don't like it. I can see both sides of this one, but frankly I'm just too amused by the smooshes to give them up. (Following thoughts mainly lifted from my comments in Al's LJ cos I'm lazy, and want to get back to writing fic.)

I'm a sucker for in-jokes, and apparently my sense of humour is stuck in five-year-old mode, too, because I do use the concatenated names mainly cos I find them funny. Clex, as has been pointed, does lend itself to all sorts of fun words like Clexactly and Clexciting and Clextasy. (And let's not forget Clex Mix!) I'm amused by the homonymous but very different Clana and Chlana. While I hate the idea of the pairing, I enjoy saying Lantha because it sounds like the only-slightly-less-monstrous Bantha (of Star Wars). To detour briefly into another fandom, isn't Spike/Buffy Spiffy?

And yes, I giggle at Clitney. (More like 13-year-old humour there, but who's counting?) To me, the fact that boys don't have clits just makes it funnier. I don't really like the idea of Lex/Hamilton, but it amuses me that if they got together -- since the good doctor's first name is Steven -- it would bring new meaning to Sex.

But I won't try too hard if there's not a funny new name to be made out of the two partners'. I mean, seriously, how would you combine "Jonathan" and "Lionel" and not have it look silly in an unfunny way? And in some cases, the names flow together too well and the fact that it's a pairing can be overlooked, as in Lionell.

Analysing why I do this has, ironically, inspired me to go back and smoosh names from old fandoms where AFAIK it was never done. Nobody can convince me that referring to the hallowed Original Slash Pairing as Kock is not titter-worthy.

I love the smooshy names, but I started out in a fandom that did the smooshy names. Homicide had too many overlap initials for us to use the standard K/S indication, so we had Mikenmel, Mikentim, Frankentim, etc., etc., etc.. It never occurred to me that the name smashy might be annoying to some people.

And yes, I get a 14-year-old-boy thrill out of Clitney! Har har! It's a dirty word! But what's the party line on Chloe/Clark/Lex? I've been calling it Chlarx, but that sounds like a Star Trek character...

I've heard it called Chlexark. I kinda like it. Another goofy yet regal pairing.

And Nell/Lionel should be "Nellonel" -- the most evil candy bar ever!

Nellonel... do we even want to know what the creamy filling is in that?

Marshmallow, I'd imagine: sticky, bad for you and much improved by being roasted over a nice hot fire.

Frankentim, hee, I'm tittering (with my hands clutched to my chest, just to be on the safe side).

Chlarx, but that sounds like a Star Trek character...

You slay me with funny, Hope.
