Identity Crisis

Issue #1 hits stores today. I'm about to go get my copy, as well as the rest of the week's comix... I haven't seen any actual spoilers yet, but I want to get some thoughts of a possibly spoilery nature I've had posted before I go.

We know one of the DCU's mainstays is going to die.

We know there's some secret so big the JLA is willing to die to keep it, and that somebody is, in fact, going to make that sacrifice.

We don't know who's in that coffin yet. But from the (beautiful Michael Turner) promo poster we have reason to believe that it's NOT Zatanna, Hawkman, Flash (Wally), Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow (Ollie), Black Canary, or (...who is that on the end? Damage? Arsenal?).

So who, in the ranks of the JLA, does that leave? Hawkgirl, for one, sure, but it'd be almost too obvious for it to be her given the events of the Justice League toon season finale. There are no Green Lanterns depicted, but spoilers for the return of Hal Jordan later this year and discussion of how this does not mean Kyle has to go leave me reasonably sure the GLs are safe from this catastrophe, at least.

Whose death would move the whole host of the DCU's heroes? These people are NOT all friends. And who would be privy to the closely-guarded secret whose existence most people have never even guessed at? Who were the founding members of the JLA, back in the day?

I'm hoping against hope it's not J'onn in that box. Because, damnit... I just am.

::sigh::

edited to add: Follow-up here, as firmly straddling the spoiler line as this post. Still hoping I won't be mourning the last Martian by the end of the miniseries.

I hope I'm wrong. I do. I just needed to get that off my chest.

Gah! No! Let them off Hawkman, the dumbest hero ever to dumb. If they touch my beloved green woobie, I will be very cross.

Oh, Hawkman's not the WORST hero ever.

...Um, which Hawkman did you mean? I think he may hold the record for most unique retconned origins, surpassing even poor Supergirl.

But, yeah. The DCU wouldn't be the same without J'onn.

Errr, the ways I understand it, the thing about Identity Crisis is that the significant others and family members of the heros are being targeted. So, think lower.

[btw, the first spoilers are out already about who it is, but I bet you want to be surprised]

Yes, I did want. Thanks for not spilling the beans!

I'd actually read the significant-others-targeting thing somewhere, I think, but more lately all I've looked at is solicit copy, and I'd quite forgotten.

Of course, some costumed heroes may yet die...

Hey, it doesn't exactly make me dance with delight, either...
