fanart. also fanart icon update.
Aug. 7th, 2005 10:10 pm(Note: Explanation of where I've been and what I've been up to will not be in this post. Hopefully *that* post will follow sometime later this week.)
So Te and I have, of course, been following with great interest (and many shrieks, of hilarity, terror and other emotions) Mary's roomful-of-Robins post, also known as the 'Dreams of Hearts Afar' WIP. Earlier in the weekend, Te and I discussed pre-Crisis Jason's probable reactions on encountering current-continuity Dick in his present uniform. Te subsequently snippetified the conversation -- you can read it here, and probably should, as today's fanart offering will make little sense without it.
Yesterday afternoon, inspired by that conversation, I drew this sketch (click thumbnail for larger image):

I scanned the sketch at a friendly neighbourhood Kinko's (for those near a fully-equipped Kinko's, they have self-service design stations, both Mac and PC, complete with scanners and internet connectivity; it's only 45 cents per minute, and you can either buy a loaded self-service Kinko's card or simply stick your debit or credit card into the reader -- scanning the image, cropping and saving it at a large-yet-manageable size, and uploading it to two different websites took less than 10 minutes, even on an unfamiliar computer) on my way home. Earlier today, I cleaned up (most of) the dust-marks and graphite smudges and the large paper-wrinkle shadows that showed up due to my having used a rather flimsy grade of printer paper to draw on.
I'll eventually clean it up some more, especially the woefully sketchy mirror, and add in a couple of missing details: the compartments on Dick's right shoulder guard, the bottom hem of his half-shirt, etc. I may even get round to colouring it -- I really ought to, since much of Jay's point in the redesign would be to add colour and sparkle, neither of which really show in a black-and-white drawing. There's also supposed to be a Jay in there off to Dick's left, clasping his hands and practically capering with joy at the fabulous effect, but I may not draw him in -- it's literally been years since I did any successful figure drawing, and it was never one of my strengths.
Will be cross-posted to
comics_fanart at some point, possibly after I've done at least some of the planned touching-up.
Oh, yeah, and...
Last year, I made myself a fanartists-love-Dick icon. Some months ago,
derryderrydown drew me a new Dick to go in it as her contribution. Much belatedly, I finally got round to iconifying that lovely drawing and updating the icon. That's it there at the top of the post.
