Ouch. Thank you for writing this. I actually had needed context on the Maine French issue, which a friend mentioned yesterday in one of her posts--I feel guilty for not already knowing it, given that my probably-possibly part-Micmaq grandfather (this can neither be confirmed nor denied, as there's been no contact with his extended family in the 40 years since his death, and any documentation that exists is back in Canada with my Aunt) and his family were from Nova Scotia, so I really should be more up to speed on the tangled and messy history of the place.
