You just helped me understand something about my (step) grandmother (who is dead now). She used to tell this story about how, as a child, her father forbid her from speaking French. It was a very short story, with no context to explain why a family that could trace its history through the New England area would have French as its primary language. So, that's a bit sad, because she was always retelling that memory to us, first generation slavic immigrants - slav is Norse for "slave" - and my family has taken care to pass on our language.
