Takei came out in an SF magazine 20 years ago. I remember reading about it. Don't remember which one -- but George's gayness is the second-worst-kept secret in Trek fandom (first, of course, is The Shatner Turbo 2000 toupee). But since a geek-mag for Trekkies doesn't *count*, no one commented on it.
Decent number of The Brethren in Trek: Michael Dorn (Worf), the late Merrit Buttrick (David Marcus), William Theiss (the far-out TOS costumer), Mike Minor (SFX in first Trek movie). And those are just the ones off the top of my head.
