When you think about gay cities... There's San Francisco, most people's first thought; there's Parkersburg, West Virginia, which to most people's surprise has a higher per-capita gay population than San Francisco (more so if they've ever been to Parkersburg); there's even "gay Paris."

But there's only one city where the modern gay-rights movement was born kicking, screaming and glittering. There's only one city where that birthday was once upon a time celebrated with a kicking, screaming, glittery parade, the first of its kind. And in that city, every year for decades now, there's been another parade commemorating the first with kicking, screaming and glitter.

What's Jack on about? It's the 2003 New York City Gay Pride Parade.

(It's actually more inclusive than that, of course; over the years lesbians, bisexuals, and transgendered people were added to the official name of the event, and many genderqueer people of other sorts, as well as downright straight people from organizations like PFLAG -- Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays -- march right along every year. But I digress.)

Living as I do an easy and affordable 2-hour train ride from the City, I'm going to this year's parade. There's a group of folks from my area whom I'll be travelling with as well as my dear young old friend Sam-Sarin, known to the LJ world as [livejournal.com profile] xliarx, who's making a special stop in his summer tour to go with us.

If any of my LJ buddies from the slash world plan to go (or are inspired by this post to make eleventh-hour plans to go) leave a comment and we'll see if we can't figure out times, places, ways and means to meet up.

Oh! and I actually rotated an old icon back in. The Jack is back.

...And you know, when you draw the draw the Venn diagram for that...

Okay, enough philological geekery, on to the poll.
