Waaay over the deadline, but here's my answer to this week's "goodbye" challenge over at [livejournal.com profile] wednesday100:

"Farewell"

Jor-El stands beside me, pontificating. He loves making pompous, portentious speeches, and this is the opportunity of his lifetime.

"You carry with you the hope and destiny of our entire planet, my son."

He drones sonorously on; eventually I stop listening. I've heard it all before. Hours of his lectures are programmed into the vehicle he's built, but no machine could relay my love to Kal-El, or my grief over having to abandon him.

Jor-El finally finishes. I watch the tiny craft that cradles our child rise into the sky until its glint of reflected light is lost among the stars.

would you like some smut with that?

::sigh::

Yes, I am doing NaNoWriMo -- that's National Novel Writing Month, if you've somehow managed to find this journal entry without having heard of it. Insane people commit to writing at least 1500 words per day during November, on the theory that at the end of the month they'll have finished the first draft of a novel.

This year, I am one of the crazies. Though I'm realistic enough that I half-expect it to turn out to be more like NaNoWriSea for me -- the build-to-winter season, because I'll be so surprised if I get even a novella's worth written before December, but if I extend it to the end of January, I might get somewhere resembling done. And I'd rather spend three months banging out a novel that might not necessarily be my best, than waste one month writing crap when I could be writing something halfway good instead. I have no doubt lots of people will write good novels in the allotted 30 days; Isaac Asimov used to do it all the time; but it's not in me. I'll write at least something every day, and NaNoWriMo if nothing else serves to goad me into that.

I will not be putting the monstrosity-in-progress up on LJ, either publicly or privately, the way many of the other NaNoWriMo'ers are doing. It's a sort of original-male-character/original-male-character dark romance. I will be asking for one or two friends to look at it with an editing eye from time to time, but that's about it.

Everyone who has mentioned zombies in chat, IM or an LJ that shows up on my friends page over the last month? I hate you. I hate you with the burning intensity of a pyre heaped with flailing zombies.

Most of all, I hate Rafael and Luis, my OMCs. They won't shut up.
