Dick!

This could have been a Gratuitous Icon Post. It nearly was, in fact; I love this new icon so much I was actually going to post just to show it off, whereas the other dozen-odd icons I've uploaded since getting my new icon space (thank you again, LJ fairy!) I was just going to, you know, use.

But today is some sort of cosmic I Love Dick day.

Last night, [livejournal.com profile] thete1 tried pimping a Dick story to me. (She has it recced in her LJ, too.) Normally this would've worked like offering fish blood to a shark, but I was engrossed in trying to finish a birthday fic for the Spike on very short notice, and decided to be a good Jack and reserve the shiny new story as a reward for getting my own story done. Ha.

(By the way, if you're completely lost at this point, the Dick in question is Dick Grayson, better known as the first Boy Wonder to don the Robin costume and fight crime at the side of the Batman. He grew up to become Nightwing, the star of my new icon, and fights crime in one of Gotham City's nastier suburbs.)

"Wrestle"

I did manage to hold it until this morning. Then I read the story -- ficlet, really, it's part of a larger story and still in unpolished draft version. And then I immediately read it again. Then I did some other stuff, re-read once more, and went out to run some errands.

I was thinking about the story almost the entire five and a half hours I was out this afternoon. It has, as they say, eaten my brain, and it's just a tiny little thing, barely over a thousand words. The first thing I did when I got home? Okay, okay, first I stowed my frozen-foods purchases in the freezer. But then I got online so I could read the story again. And again.

Now. Any story set in Gotham, or involving the Bat-family, should really only require a warning if it lacks twisted wrongness. It's kind of a given when the Batman's about. This story isn't explicit; one might even say (though I wouldn't) that nothing actually happens in it. What it does get, however, is a big blinking neon chan warning, because I'm just not comfortable reccing that kind of story without that kind of warning.

So, anyway, here's the link to Learning to Lose: Wrestle by [livejournal.com profile] sanj. (Te's rec is here.) Go, if the warning doesn't warn you off, to marvel at the artistry of what Justine characterises as an "absolutely unbetaed, rough draft version" if nothing else.

"Familiarity"

Interestingly enough, it was Livia who first recced "Wrestle" to Te, who recced it to me, you and all of LJ-land. I say "interestingly" because Livia is one of the only people I know who's approximately as Dick-obsessed as I am, and also because, around the same time all this reccing and reading were going on, Te and Livia were writing and posting Familiarity, their Dick-POV sequel to Te's Reflections and its epilogue The Other Side.

So read, if you love Dick. Or if you don't yet, read, and you will.
