I rarely participate in memes, but there have been a few short and amusing ones going around lately, and now that I'm finally caught up on responding to comments in my LJ, including the meta-heavy Batman/Robin poll post (though I still have commenting I mean to do elsewhere), I figure something light and fluffy is called for.

About a week and a half ago, someinstant posted a story¹ which, to judge by the feedback it's received, is now quite well-known. One of the elements of that story which received a great deal of praise was its footnotes².

A couple of days after that, thamiris, in a response to the Rant/Rave meme³, "waxed lyrical" about footnotes⁴ in her LJ. "Not many people can name the moment they fell in love with footnotes -- possibly because not many people love footnotes," she wrote. Her own moment of love at first sight came⁵ while reading Alexander Pope's The Dunciad.

I know when my own moment of first falling in love with footnotes happened -- as a wee Jack of eleven years or so, when I discovered Watership Down by Richard Adams. But I think Thamiris may be underestimating the power such memories have in the minds of those who have had similar experiences.

Thus, another poll. Not cutting away for this one because it's short.
