fireworks and other dazzlements
Jul. 7th, 2003 10:01 amNecessity dragged me to the library today -- I had books out that I realised belatedly were due today, and I had to physically go to the post office (which is just beside said library) to ensure that an important document arrived on schedule -- and so, I am doing a bit of journal-skimming and a little post. Otherwise, I would've just continued my recuperative coma.
I went into Manhattan again (see here for the previous trip) on 4 July, partly for the fireworks but mostly to meet up with
isilya and
ethrosdemon Kassie. We had a lovely afternoon, including lunch at a noodle house that was much better than I'd expected (see, Isi? You were right) and leisurely hanging out in the garden behind the hostel where they were staying while we waited to meet up with yet more LJ-land slashfolk. And then there was the drinking...
Anyway, the fireworks were spectacular. Or, well, that word doesn't do them justice, but I can't come up with another that does any better. We were right against the guardrail, just north of the northernmost Macy's barge, and when the really big, really high-up fireworks blossomed over our heads, they looked like they were really right over our heads and liable to streak or drop sparks right onto our heads. (They didn't of course.) And I've just never seen fireworks like these... colour combinations and sparkle effects and multi-stage combinations and shapes and just all sorts of amazing things I'd never imagined were possible with fireworks. And maybe I'm just going deaf in my old age, but even when they were really loud, they weren't too loud.
Also, just in case anyone was worried, yes, Beth and I made it back to Connecticut just fine after we all got separated. But, after all that climbing up and down subway-station stairs, and all that traipsing up and down blocks and blocks of Manhattan streets, well, I'm going to need at least another day of recuperative coma.
I'm off back to sleep now. Anyone along Isi's future route through the rest of North America who hadn't planned a rendezvous? I'd reconsider. She's a trip. ::hugs::
