I can't begin to tell you all how good Return of the King is. If you, too, went to an early screening, you know. If you haven't seen it yet, all I can tell you is, GO SEE IT.

Even if you weren't planning to.

Even if you haven't seen the first two -- there's a reason the only previous attempt at a film adaptation of Lord of the Rings only tackled RotK. Jackson's version is orders of magnitude better, of course, but my point is: while of course you'll be missing some of the backstory, it is actually possible to see Return of the King on its own and enjoy it.

Even if -- especially if -- you were planning to wait for it to come out on DVD. Yes, I know, the "extended edition" blah blah cutscenecakes. But. There are things you will miss watching this film on the "small screen." Even if you have a plasma screen bigger than the one in Bill Gates's bedroom. I can't remember the last time I saw a film that really, truly made use of the scale a theatre screen provides the way RotK does.

I'll be posting some commentary on the actual content of the film... probably hopefully sometime later today. Certainly no later than right after I get home from seeing Return of the King a second time, myself.

It really is just that good.
