buggeryI hadn't been planning to write Lord of the Rings fanfiction, for a whole great lot of reasons. (My contribution to If LotR Had Been Written By... aside.)
But.
After seeing Return of the King in the wee hours of this morning, I just had to write this.
You really do need to have seen the film to appreciate what's going on here; it's fanfiction in the sense of being wholly dependent on the reader knowing the source material. And while the same things happen in Tolkien's and Jackson's versions of the referenced scene, the way each of them presented the events was nonetheless different.
And the notes for this story are now longer than the story itself (it's a drouble -- 200 words). So:
"Fare Thee Well"
And Frodo turned, at last, to Sam. Sweet, good Sam, who even in his sadness at this parting was happy. He let go of Merry and Pippin and let himself be taken in Sam's arms, wrapped his own arms around his dearest friend and held on tight.
The embrace seemed to go on a long time, as Sam held him and he Sam, and his hands moved on Sam's back. Frodo felt he wanted never to let go; but he knew he must. He drew back, a little, and looked upon Sam. Yes, Sam was happy; and he would go home from the Havens to the Shire, and his Rosie, and be happier still. He cupped Sam's head, and pressed a kiss to his forehead, Sam's hair soft under his lips.
Finally he drew away, and followed Bilbo, and the Elves, and Gandalf, onto the ship. And though he knew it would be different still when they reached the shores of the West, yet he felt that he had truly left Middle-earth. The old pain of his wound suddenly eased. And looking back to the dock, Frodo felt that the ache in his heart, too, would heal; and he smiled.
