buggeryI promised Te awhile ago I'd dig up this link for her. And when I finally got my round tuit tonight, it occurred to me that it's a link worth pimping as far and wide as possible.
"Luthor's Gift" by Elliot S! Maggin.
This was actually written for a DC Superman anthology... but rejected for publication in / dropped from that project. Mr Maggin (and no, that's not a typo, S! is his middle initial) is one of the greats of (authorised) Superman writing from the pre-Crisis era, author of such classics as Last Son of Krypton, "The Luthor Nobody Knows", Kingdom Come (not the Alex Ross miniseries/graphic novel by the same name), etc., etc.
There's speculation from many quarters, and in many directions, as to why DC declined to publish the story. My money says it's because it's the kind of love story DC isn't yet ready to do more than hint at. Elliot S! Maggin is to Clark/Lex what Devin Grayson is to Dick/Bruce.
The feel of "Luthor's Gift" has struck more than one reader as evocative of Smallville, despite its Golden Age details such as Clark beginning a career in costume as "Superboy" during his teen years in Smallville. It doesn't exactly fit in any one corner of the Superman mythos; instead, it touches the heart of what makes Superman's story a great one, and shows us the Superman (and Clark) nobody knows. Read it. You won't be sorry.
