Dell notebooks aren't that cheap ($500-600), though they do have some deals. She might want to look at refurbished computers, through J&R or overstock.com. The IBM Thinkpad, while not my favorite design, is light. The Squid lent me his, after my screen died, and I've had no trouble with it. I had a Toshiba, which was very hardy but weighed close to 8 lb. By the time you finish packing all the other crap into your bag, it weighs considerably more.
