Re Dell: Yeah, I knew they'd have some at the upper end of her range, and buying new carries advantages like warranty repairs. Thanks for the suggestion to look at refurbished (as opposed to just used) computers. Thanks for your thoughts on the Thinkpad and Toshiba laptops. Zaida's actually used to carrying around a backpack full of files and stuff, which can get pretty heavy; but that's why she doesn't want a laptop that weighs more than 8 lbs., because she's factoring in the other weight she'll be carrying with it.
