Or possibly I have that backwards?

So the other day, Te made a long, thinky post about why the treatment of characters of colour in both canon (primarily DC comics, but by no means exclusively) and fandom (same deal) creative works continues to be disappointing, and why that's not okay. Her post is part of a larger discussion going on in various parts of the internet about race and gender in fandom -- both what fans create and what we consume -- and generated its share of discussions and follow-up posts.

In one of the discussion threads on that post (begun by [livejournal.com profile] vassilissa here), discussing why the character of Teal'c on Stargate: SG-1 gets such short shrift, Te made a comparison between SG-1 and classic Trek when she raised the question,
"Really, what would slash fandom have looked like -- if anything -- if Leonard Nimoy had had darker skin?"

Like Te, and not a few others, I was stunned and inspired by Elena's response, "I'd like to imagine that maybe if they'd cast Nichelle Nichols as Spock (she wanted the role when she read the script)" -- I grew up in Trek fandom, but I've grown away from it as an adult, and I had never heard that story before.

It would, of course, have changed everything.

If Jim Kirk's Vulcan First Officer had been played by a black woman...

I kind of had to do this. The notion is so compelling... I may yet write fanfiction around this 'what if?' too. Rewrite some classic episodes, maybe ("Amok Time," "Mirror, Mirror," so many choices...) or put -- It's hard to say what to call her, isn't it? Spock was Spock in the script, and I don't think Vulcan naming conventions were set until later in series history, so that could just become a female-appropriate name; T'Pock is frankly awful, but T'Pura has a lovely ring to it, I think. -- First Officer T'Pura into an original story.

It was crazy fun making this manip. It's difficult to make a red as rich as TOS communications uniforms were into the decidedly pastel blue of science/medical (though if T'Pura is the First Officer, she should be in command yellow, unless she still is the science officer as well...). The ears, on the other hand, drove me nuts, and I can't even lay the blame on the fact that most of them ought to be a cheap late-60s television prosthetic, because the shading is all wrong. I did better smoothing out her expression, though that wasn't a complete success either -- it's *hard* to make Nichelle Nichols not smile! At least I can be unconflictedly pleased with how her eyebrows came out.

(Incidentally, I know the rank stripes on her uniform are wrong, designating her a lieutenant's rank, but I just haven't been up to tackling *creating* a meandering line of textured metallic braid, much less allowing for folds on the fabric.)

While I'm here nattering on about Star Trek... The internets and fandom have *both* failed me! How is it that I didn't find out until nearly a year after the fact that George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu in ST:TOS and most of the films that followed, came out to the news media as a gay man?! Ah well. In honour of my finally catching the clue, new icon.

No wonder I've always been so hot for Goerge Takei.

I am unconflictedly pleased about the whole manip.

T'Pura does have a lovely ring to it.

George Takei's orientation was enough of an open secret in con circles that I recall a heated argument between a friend and a homophobe asshole over a decade ago where his name was invoked.

George Takei rules.

After he came out, I discovered that I was the only person I knew who didn't know already. D'oh!

FABULOUS manip.

Jack, we thought you knew! This is what you get for gafiating.

In other news, T'Pura continues to be hot like a hot, hot thing. Man. Imagine T'Pura in Amok time, and her held-hostage-by-his-biology intended? It puts a slightly different complexion on the dynamic!

Hee!

I had the "Wait, he was in? What?" reaction when he came out officially.

(And, damn, that's a nice manip. I just keep staring at her.)

Okay, what needs to happen is a ficathon. And it should be pimped across fandom.

...for just a moment, I misread your intention, and imagined T'Pura in Amok Time, violently raging to be returned to Vulcan to, um, mate, then beating the crap out of Kirk in an extremely hot unusual, but Emma-Peel-esque, action sequence for a woman in 1967. But I just have a Vulcan fetish anyway.

Okay, just so you know (because I'm in the process of writing an essay on Star Trek and found this out while researching): When Nichelle Nichols auditioned for Uhura, Uhura wasn't written yet, so they had her read Spock instead. On the grounds that she was proving that she could act, she insisted on playing Spock, not "lines intended for Spock with the vaguely described character as-yet-unnamed who would be Uhura".

After she was done, Gene Roddenberry said: "Do you think she'd look good in pointed ears? We could call her a Vulcanita."

I really think the two of you have to STEP AWAY from Tolkien now. Otherwise I'll combine everything and start writing Dick in Hobbiton in the throes of Pon Farr. DON'T THINK I WON'T.

Can it be Dick/T'Pura? Possibly as narrated by Galadriel? Because. Um.

I'm just saying.

I'm wrong, of course. It should totally be narrated by Faith. To Sam. To make him stop thinking about Samara. And maybe not Hobbiton so much as the Forest Primeval, as the Big Bad Wolf stalks them all, or possibly just hits on Rita Sue.

I... should probably sleep soon.

So like, there's this wicked nasty forest full of crazy stuff -- little people living in burrows, this horndog wolf drooling for one sexy-mama stripper as she goes by. All kinds of whack, you see what I'm sayin'? Hey, listen to me when I tell you a story, kid! Quit looking at that TV. Beastie'll come out when she's good and ready.

In the forest is an acrobat guy. He's one of those nutjobs who wears a mask and goes around beating the crap out of people for justice. Hot, but he's a corkscrew in the sack of hammers, you know? A little twisted in the head.

And with him's the smokinest alien outside of that pay-per-view I saw once. Can't go past the tentacles for good animated fun, see what I'm saying? But this chick's as good as it gets without sucker caps. From the race of Vulcans, which for the record? Nothing to do with volcanoes.

They're walking together and they suddenly get hit by this mating ritual, and they're tearin' at each others' clothes and putting mouths and fingers in all kinds of fun places, and everything's all hot and wet and hungry and -- hey, look at the well on the TV! We got showtime. Ready for some action, Sammy?

I can't imagine a world without Leonard's Spock in it, because, Ilovehimomg, but I can totally see Officer T'Pura on deck. Dr McCoy would explode like ten times a day. *grin* Two Vulcan officers on the Enterprise. She and Spock could do twin eyebrow things when McCoy started acting irrational. They could comment stuff out loud to *each other* instead of poor Spock having to think things to himself!
And maybe I'm biased seeing as I still want to grow up to marry Spock but ohLORD she is HAWT.

As much as I adore Spock, I adore this idea too. (Much in the vein that I adore the idea of Katee Sackoff as a girl!Wash with nothing changed regardin plot/characterization, except that Wash is now a woman.)

The manip is also quite striking. Is it bad I want T'Pura/Spock fic now?
