Oh, tonight is a GOOD night.

Edited to add: No longer using the John Grayson icon, but here's what it looked like...

First and foremost, I have a new default icon. I haven't keyworded it, as I'll probably rotate it back out in a few weeks once I'm over this crush, but... John Grayson is my new dead gay boyfriend. So gorgeous. ::stares at own icon:: Cropping courtesy the lovely and talented [livejournal.com profile] liviapenn, scanned page courtesy of PopCultureShock -- yes, they have a preview up of the cover and first four pages of NIGHTWING #100, and I do urge those who haven't yet gotten their hands on the issue not to drive themselves nuts by looking at the preview pages (at least the first two; three and four are actually flashbacks to Dick's youth and more 'squee'- than 'eee'-inducing). ::stares at icon some more:: Guh. SO HOT.

I also have newly Santa-fied icons courtesy of [livejournal.com profile] karabou:

And, in news that's actually arguably better for the rest of fandom than me... [livejournal.com profile] jamjar has finally posted Beyond the Veil, a Batman Beyond story she actually wrote some months ago, and which I was fortunate to read when it was still at draft stage. You need to read this story, people. Frequent readers of this journal will have noticed that I seldom if ever rec fanfiction here, and that's no accident, but I am making an exception to my usual policy. There are certain stories which are so *right*, they become part of one's view of the world in which they're set; become part of one's personal canon for the medium, even if the story in question is fanfiction and outside of official canon by definition. "Beyond the Veil" is the gold standard of such stories. I can't NOT believe it's "true" for the animated universe's Gotham, and I even feel it's as likely as not to work in the comics universe as well.

Incidentally, so long as you know Bruce Wayne is Batman? All you really need to know by way of background for this story is that, when Bruce reaches his 80s, he's been forced by his own failing health to retire from active duty as Batman and allowed a young man named Terry McGinnis (who has black hair and blue eyes and resembles an even prettier Dick Grayson with the street-smarts and wise mouth of the animated universe's Tim Drake or the comics' Jason Todd) to succeed him as the new Batman in a technologically advanced new Batsuit. Now, go. Read. Love.
